The Claremont Independent is a Claremont McKenna College conservative publication that is privately funded. The student authors discuss a variety of topics that often pertain to on-campus events, always with a conservative approach. In light of the recent events on campus, they wrote a series of articles bashing students participating in the movement.
They recently wrote an article “Safe Spaces Segregate Claremont Colleges.” The article argues that allowing students of marginalized identities to have a safe space to congregate would segregate the colleges and isolate and therefore marginalize “other” students (aka white students). They misused the term “segregation” throughout the article, completely forgetting the history and weight behind such a word. Another post on this microaggression blog accurately explains why this word usage in such a context is improper.
The Claremont Independent has spent their time invalidating, trivializing, and dehumanizing the lives and experiences of students of marginalized identities.
