"To all of you listening who want to be allies to the QTPOC on campus, allyship starts with listening and prioritizing the expressed needs of the marginalized community you are not a part of. People who claim to be allies often replicate violence by placing the burden on victims and survivors of violence to substantiate their claims that they have been hurt instead of focusing on holding aggressors accountable for the violence that we are coming forth about. This is about our survival. We are speaking out. We need you to listen."

Description
We are creating an interactive timeline spanning 2014 and 2015, detailing acts of violence against queer and trans people of color. This timeline will include brief descriptions of the acts with links to more information, as well as local resources. Additionally, the timeline will include positive events of importance to the trans community, such as policy changes and advances in activism. This project is our attempt to make a contribution to the community while recognizing our status as allies. As two cisgender white women, we will strive to avoid making the issue about us or silencing members of the community we aim to support.
Background
Though we can not and should not pretend to know the life experiences of QTPOC, we would like to use the privilege we have to do what we can to boost the voices of those that are widely ignored or silenced by the mainstream media. We will not continue to ignore the violence and brutality that is occurring on a daily basis towards QTPOC and we will work to share the messages of those affected. We recognize that issues of gender and sexuality are connected to issues of race and socioeconomic class, and we will not support activism in a vacuum that ignores these intersections.
goals
As active listeners, we seek to bring increased awareness about the struggles QTPOC face. We seek to bring acknowledgment and honoring of the QTPOC that we have lost and who have generally been ignored by the media. We also recognize the inherent problematic nature of only depicting the QTPOC community as victims of violence, and so we will also focus on providing resources and raising awareness of the positive steps forward happening in trans activism. Overall, we seek to incite critical questions about each of our own actions in helping to make our environment safe and inclusive: what does it mean to be an ally to QTPOC in Claremont and in the larger world?
