Yesterday in my Chemistry class at Keck Science I noticed that an individual in my class was wearing a Washington Redskins jersey. The jersey that displayed a giant Native American head with a feather Headdress. As discussed on many occasions thought out country, the image of the Native American as a mascot for the Redskins football team, is highly problematic and racist- both in terms of the name and the image. The name of the team in itself is a case of blatant racism and with the image being used as the mascot for football team as white entertainment, it is cultural appropriation.

- While I have no problem with people supporting the favorite teams, I do have a problem with the Washington football team’s name and use of a culture and group of people as it’s mascot. The jersey this individual sported is extremely offensive to the Native American community. While the individual is not whole responsible in the racism the Native American community receives due to the football team’s name and mascot, they do play a part in keeping this racism alive by sporting the jersey, thereby perpetuating racial stereotypes.
