The federal government attempted to take away my financial aid (a "full ride," mind you) because I was half of a class/only 0.5 credits away from where they thought I should be as a rising senior. This is because I took a leave of absence for a semester in order to spend that time earning money to keep my family from becoming homeless. I took a leave too late in the semester for my financial aid to be refunded, so I basically spent one of my eight semesters of aid to receive zero credits. So, essentially, because I was poor and I felt a duty to help my family, the government tried to make me even more poor by taking away my financial aid and forcing me to take out $30k+ in high-interest private loans if I wanted to actually finish my degree.
