In one of my classes at Scripps, we had a discussion about black minstrelsy and the effects it has one the way black people are represented today in the media. As the conversation was going, a white female student decided to raise her hand and say, "This really makes me uncomfortable." Although her intentions weren't malicious, she made the conversation about her, and her white experience. She should've realized that everyone in the room is uncomfortable with these disturbing, caricature-like representations, but having a dialogue about it is important, rather than dismissing it as something that makes you uncomfortable.
