If you touch its posterior end...

My science professor was talking about the evolutionary development of mechanosensation (touch). He said the following “There’s a bacteria called Paramecium - if you touch its anterior end, it turns around. And if you touch its posterior end...it files a complaint for sexual harassment.” Really?? I couldn’t believe that he made a joke of sexual harassment like this in the classroom. I was truly taken aback.

It's so cool that you're undocumented

In a class discussion, we were sharing our personal motivations for the topics we had chosen for each of our final essays. I mentioned that, as an undocumented student, I was interested in researching how social media can provide a place for undocumented immigrants to share their stories. One of the classmates in my group responded to that with “Wait are you really undocumented? That’s so interesting, that’s so cool.” Yeah, it’s pretty cool being in constant fear of deportation and persecution even though I’ve lived here almost my whole life? This moment just illuminated for me how disconnected and oblivious some people are to the experiences of undocumented students and the injustices of our immigration system.

no more cake for you

I heard some guys in the dining hall making fun of their friend who was about to take a piece of cake. According to them, it was visible that he had had enough of cake over thanksgiving.

"SO skinny..."

One of my friends is constantly referred to as skinny among his other friends. He says that they think it is funny that he is so small, even though he is a person of colour. Since when does skin color have anything to do with muscle mass??

A teacher of mine had a topic about Native Americans in class. He constantly referred to one of the girls in class, looking for comments from her, because she is of that descent.

"Constantly High"

Among some groups on campus, it seems to be a running joke to refer to their friends of color as constantly high.

I was about to play tennis with a friend, and all of the courts were occupied. Two other guy walks past us, frustrated because they cannot play, saying “I hate these Asians who always take up the courts”.

Cuffing szn

12/10/2017

Cuffing season is when students begin looking for a partner once the colder seasons come in search of (to put it lightly) “cuddle buddy”.  Some guys were having a party and inviting a lot of women in hopes to find their cuff.  After the party, screenshots were taken of their group chat detailing a draft of women the men wanted to cuff.  There were five rounds of choices.  It was like fantasy football for them.

A close friend of mine is from Singapore and is taking a political philosophy class.  She did not do the reading for one class and the instructor noticed that she was quiet.  He asked her if her English was strong enough to fully understand the reading.  English is her first language.

I was getting lunch with a group of my female friends and we were talking about the current administration's stance on reproductive health, primarily abortion.  One of my male friends said, “Well if you ever need an abortion just come to me and we will grab a wire hanger to fish it out.”  We were all appalled.
